Get Ready

Prep & Layout

Confirm pool equipment is on-site for same-day hookup, or document any stub-outs needed.

Confirm with homeowner whether you or the electrician owns bonding on this project.

Suction line setup for fountain pumps: channel drain or two main drains 3 ft apart per VGB code.

Install hydro relief valve.

Verify propane tank size and regulator match the heater's BTU requirements.

Plan to install an inline pool chlorinator during this phase (no salt system).

Execute

During Work

Maintain 10" of straight pipe before any pump for proper flow.

All pool returns must enter level so plaster fittings finish flush.

Spa jets: place at heights confirmed with homeowner. Air line must loop higher than waterline (often through dam wall).

Conduit runs: from main panel to equipment, and from pool lights back to equipment.

Bonding: every metal component (handrails, slides, equipment, J-boxes) must be bonded with #8 copper wire. Tie into the steel cage's equipotential grid.

Bond every scupper / fountain body to the perimeter wire.

Pressure-test all plumbing and conduit. Standard target: 30 psi. In freezing climates use air, not water.

Trenches: maintain 12" separation between gas (poly with tracer wire) and electrical conduit unless using two trenches.

Gas line under concrete or patio cover must be in a vented sleeve per code.

Install a check valve on the return side of the main pump to prevent chlorine concentration backing up.

Install a backflow preventer on the autofill water supply — type per local jurisdiction.

Bolt equipment to the pad. Use sweep 90s wherever possible to reduce head loss.

Label every stub (return, light, jet, etc.) so each line is identifiable.

Plumb a return line into the tanning ledge to keep that area circulating.

Wrap Up

Paint exposed PVC with UV-resistant paint.

Confirm pressure is holding steady before leaving site. Document the gauge reading.

Clean up the site.
