Why this phase matters

This is where your pool gets its personality. The selections you locked in during planning come to life — but the installation matters as much as the materials. Confirm everything is on-site, watch the focal-point tile placement, and don't skip the pre-deck inspection.

Before This Phase

Confirm all materials are on-site the day before — tile, coping, grout, thinset, silicone. If you're providing them, double-check selections.

Use frost-proof tile — even outside freeze zones it holds up better against pool chemicals and weather. Avoid glass tile unless you're prepared for higher cost, longer install, and crack risk.

Confirm flagstone or slip-resistant tile selection for the beach entry.

Order 5–10% extra tile for chips, breaks during cuts, and future repairs — same dye lot is invaluable.

Continue monitoring pressure gauge at the equipment.

Confirm the cascades, scuppers, and overflow line are being installed during this phase (set into the gunite shell).

For any raised pool wall backed by dirt or a planter, confirm sub is applying a waterproof membrane (Semco, Laticrete 9235) on the back side to prevent efflorescence.

Confirm silicone bead at the top of the waterline tile (between tile and coping) — allows movement without grout cracking.

Confirm skimmer and autofill lids are finished with the same coping material for a seamless look.

Walk through grout color choice — match tile or match plaster?

Pro Tips

On a raised spa wall (or any focal-point dam wall), ask the tile sub to start with full-size tiles at the focal point and put cuts at the far ends.

Confirm sub uses premium water-grade silicone (2–3× cost of hardware-store stuff) — lasts much longer, won't peel.

After tile and coping are complete, schedule the pre-deck inspection if your jurisdiction requires it.

Keep extra tiles in a labeled bin somewhere safe at home — same dye lot, future repairs.
